Staff sickness closes the airport

Blackpool Airport was closed and flights were diverted on Sunday due to staff sickness, the Gazette reports. Two air traffic control tower staff called in sick, which caused an inbound Jet2 flight from Palma had to be diverted to Manchester. Smaller pleasure and business aircraft trying to land after 19:30 were advised to make alternative arrangements.
A spokesman for the airport said the closure was due to ‘highly unusual circumstances’. He said 3 staff usually man the tower, but as 2 called in sick there was insufficient cover. The airport apologised to passengers who were due to land at the airport and anyone affected.
