Human trafficker jailed

A human trafficker caught trying to smuggle an illegal immigrant into the UK via Blackpool Airport has been jailed, the Gazette reports. Lampros Gkampos, 47, from Greece, was sentenced to 32 months in prison after he pleaded guilty to assisting unlawful entry at Preston Crown Court.
Mr Gkampos and his travelling companion were stopped by immigration officials at the airport after arriving on a Ryanair flight from Girona, Spain on December 12 last year. He was charged with attempting to facilitate the entry of a non-EU national into the UK, whilst the man who attempted to enter the UK at the same time was returned to Spain the next day.
Lancashire Police worked with officers from Interpol and the Guardia Civil in Spain to bring about the prosecution. Mr Gkampos had committed similar offences in Canada in 2007, and the Canadian authorities assisted in the prosecution too.
