£10 passenger fee introduced
05.01.09
Passengers flying from Blackpool Airport have to pay a£10 Development Fee (ADF) in addition to the cost of their flights from today. The fee is paid by all departing passengers over the age of 16, with the money raised to be put towards a £2m project to upgrade runways and passenger facilities, and to attract new airlines. At the same time free parking for up to 15 days has been introduced at the airport.
David Kershaw, Chief Executive of the airport, said he was confident of attracting more passengers and airlines despite the charge, because of the free parking offer. The scheme has the backing of Blackpool Council, but Ryanair axed its daily flights to Dublin and its Girona route in protest. Aer Arann will replace the Dublin route, launching flights today.
Passengers pay the fee at a ticket machine in the main airport terminal, and proof of payment is needed to pass through airport security into the departure lounge. Blackpool is the third UK airport to introduce such a charge, after Norwich and Newquay.
