Landing scare at Blackpool Airport

A holiday flight was forced to abort its landing just before it was due to touch down, after a group of youths were spotted close to the runway at Blackpool Airport. The Jet2 flight from Palma eventually landed safely at 23:00 on Friday, after security staff and police located the group.
Contractors working on the site, spotted around ten youths next to the airport fence and reported that they believed they were trying to climb over. The plane's pilot was asked to do another circuit before landing as a precautionary measure.
A spokeswoman for the airport said the youngsters had not got onto the runway and the pilot was only asked to delay his landing as a ‘precaution’. She added: ‘It was not an emergency. We have got contractors working on the airfield who spotted a group of kids in tents landside near a cricket ground at the end of Runway 28. The contractors thought they were trying to climb over. They contacted security as a precaution.’
Police were called to the scene to speak with the youths. A police spokesman said: ‘The group had been drinking and had entered on the airport side unintentionally. ‘The airport rang us because they knew the plane was due in 5 minutes. The plane had to go around again. Police attended to speak with the youths. No arrests were made.’
