A drug dealer who used Blackpool Airport to smuggle drugs into the UK has been jailed for 8 years, the Blackpool Gazette reports. Sniffer dogs at the airport alerted police to Gerard Davis, 52, when he landed at the terminal on August 11 following a trip to Spain. His luggage was X-rayed and a quantity of cannabis and amphetamines was found in his wash bag.
A police search of Mr. Davis' rented house in Hambleton uncovered cocaine and amphetamine with a street value of almost £50,000 plus a small quantity of heroin. Police also searched Davis' sister's house, where £36,000 in cash was found in a safe.
Preston Crown Court was told Mr. Davis' garage had been turned into a makeshift drugs factory, with drugs paraphernalia including a hydraulic press used to pad down drugs for transportation and a heat sealing machine.
The former gambling addict pleaded guilty to 3 counts of possessing illegal substances with intent to supply and one count of possessing criminal property. Ken Hind, defending, said: 'He got himself into a situation where he had a gambling debt of £10,000. He got involved in order to offset what he owed.'
Jailing Davis for 8 years, Judge Anthony Russell QC, said: 'Class A drugs result in despair and misery. You were part of the wholesale distribution of such drugs.'
