Jet2 take over their ground handling operation
08.01.11
Jet2 has taken over its check-in and baggage handling operation sat Blackpool Airport, the Gazette reports. The budget airline won a High Court battle with the airport last month after the airport refused to cater for late night or early morning flights. The airport was told it had to ‘use its best endeavours’ to accept for Jet2 flights, but now the airline has taken on airport staff to work solely for them to ensure a level of service.
The move means that Jet2 staff will now meet passengers, check them in and carry out airside roles. And the budget airline – which now employs over 60 staff at the airport – plans to take on a further 10 staff over the busy summer season.
Ian Doubtfire, Jet2's managing director, told the newspaper: ‘We had a separate agreement with the airport to provide the handling which they gave us notice on last year. Taking on staff at the airport is not something we planned to do, but it really does strengthen our product at Blackpool. So from having something forced upon us we are quite glad we made the change.’
