Customs raids net thousands of cigarettes
08.08.06
Two raids by Customs officers at Blackpool Airport in June uncovered more than 70,000 contraband cigarettes in bags brought in by travellers from abroad. Officers confiscated the haul after many of the bags were abandoned by passengers.
They were part of more than 3 million cigarettes seized by HM Revenue and Customs officials on the 3 main airports in the North West during last month. In just 24 hours, officers also swooped on Manchester Airport and Liverpool John Lennon collecting hundreds of thousands of packets of cigarettes, along with tobacco smuggled into the country.
