New owners target London route

The new owners of Blackpool Airport have said that flights to London are their top target. Balfour Beatty also announced that it will invest £90m in upgrading and expanding the airport, and that they want to increase passenger numbers by more than four million over the next 30 years.
The construction, engineering and infrastructure gourp bought a 95% stake in Blackpool Airport this week from Northern Ireland-based Mar Properties in a deal worth £14m. It has already started work on getting new routes and will work with partners Regional and City Airports and airport investors Churchill to deliver ‘an exciting future for Blackpool and beyond,’ a spokesman said.
Blackpool lost its Stansted connection - operated by Ryanair - last year, but hopes are high of re-establishing a route to one of London's airports. Al Romeu, president of Churchill Airports, said: ‘We want to make sure we are the airport of choice. To do that we want to get a capital service as soon as possible. It will be one of our key priorities.’
Balfour Beatty says new developments at the hub will include re-branding the airport, increasing airport parking facilities and transport routes. Clive Coleman, technical director for Balfour Beatty, said: ‘Blackpool Airport represents a strategic investment for us. We see it as the next plank in developing our airport portfolio and we want Blackpool to grow.’
