Airport boss leaves
11.02.07
Paul Whelan, the man who oversaw the deal to take Blackpool Airport into private ownership in 2004, has stepped down from his post with City Hopper and the MAR Properties Group board. He has been replaced by Robin Horner, chief executive of MAR.
As head of the board for City Hopper, Mr Whelan helped turned around the fortunes of the airport, bringing in big low-cost names. Monarch Scheduled and Jet2.com joined Ryanair and British North West Airlines to launch services from the airport under his charge.
Mr Horner said: 'Blackpool Airport has been the fastest growing regional airport in the UK over the past 3 years. We are indebted to the efforts of Mr Whelan in harnessing this growth and we wish him well in the future.'
'Our efforts will remain focused on the further growth and development of the airport, which we hope will be a catalyst for regeneration and economic development in Blackpool.'
MAR Properties Group owns a 95% stake in Blackpool Airport, with Blackpool Council owning the other 5%. Mr Whelan has set up the Low Cost Airport Group with a number of other investors.
