Flights to America from Blackpool Airport could be launched 'within 5 years', bosses at the said today.
Paul Whelan, Executive Chairman of City Hopper Airports (who own Blackpool Airport), said: 'America is a definite possibility within the next 5 years. I see no reason why there would not be a market for people wanting to travel to, say, New York or somewhere on the east coast of the US, from Blackpool.'
American aircraft manufacturer Boeing has designed its new 787 Dreamliner plane for shorter runways like Blackpool's, but also to travel trans-Atlantic distances. The aircraft is to be in service in 2008.
Local travel agents back the move into the American market. Alison Seed, manager of Blackpool-based Bourne Travel, said: 'There is a demand for for New York weekend shopping breaks, holidays in Florida, so flights to the east coast would be hugely popular.'
