Bosses at Blackpool Airport say that the improvement works currently under way will lead more airlines using the hub. Owners Balfour Beatty have invested £2.5m in works to upgrade both the exterior and interior of the airport .
Around £1m of this is being used to lay more than 250,000sq ft of new runway surface, while £1.5m will be used to update other facilities. The massive project is scheduled to finish in time for the start of the Easter holidays.
Sue Kendrick, head of communications at Blackpool Airport, said she was in talks with a number of airlines about operating new routes to and from southern Europe. She said: ‘The runway works will allow us to take passengers to destinations which are further away such as Malta, Cyprus and Greece. We are in discussions with a number of airlines about bringing these flights to Blackpool.’
