Airport defends flight tax

Blackpool Airport has defended its £10 flight tax on all passengers, saying it has helped the hub to continue operating in a difficult economic climate, the BBC reports. The controversial Airport Development Fee (ADF) was introduced in January 2009 for all departing passengers over the age of 16. Ryanair axed all flights from the airport after it was introduced.
A spokesman said the tax is offset for many by the introduction of free airport parking at for up to 15 days. She added: ‘It [the tax] was controversial, but it has halved the loss of the airport. That is the fact of the matter. We are struggling financially. Without the support [of the ADF] we could be in a different situation.’
‘We hope we give that back to people with the free airport parking. We are very grateful for everyone that has continued to use us. Our load factors are higher than ever on the flights that we have, so we are very grateful for the support.’
