Council criticised for spending Blackpool Airport money
20.09.06
Blackpool Council plans to spend £1.4 million of money received from the sale of Blackpool Airport on roads, tourism and CCTV cameras. This has been criticised by Blackpool Gazette as reckless, amid claims the future of the facility is still not assured.
In 2004 Blackpool Council set aside the £6.2m from the sale of the Airport in case it was a commercial failure and they needed to take control financially. As the airport has been a sucess, the Council have deceided to release some of the Capital.
The Council will spend £1.2m on road repairs, £150,000 on tourism projects and £50,000 on replacing old CCTV cameras. However, at a council meeting Councillor Peter Callow was concerned that they were spending money that maybe needed because of a proposed expansion of the airport, which if opposed, could put the future success of the Airport in doubt.
