Airport to introduce £10 development fee, but free parking
20.10.08
Passengers using Blackpool Airport will be charged £10 to use the airport from next year – but will be able to park for free, the Gazette reports. Bosses have said the airport is losing millions of pounds a year and the plans are the only way to secure its future.
The £10 'development fee', which will be introduced on January 5 for passengers aged 16 and over, is expected to raise £400,000 in its first year. It will mean passengers can park for up to 15 days at the airport car park free of charge, rather than paying the current cost is between £40 and £45 a week.
The scheme is aimed at attracting more passengers from Lancashire and Cumbria, who will save on airport parking, with the cash raised channelled into attracting new routes to the airport, the newspaper reports The airport will be the only international hub in the country to offer free car parking, and only the third after Newquay and Norwich to introduce an airport development fee.
There are 800 car parking spaces at the airport, but bosses are reported to be looking at three new sites to create additional spaces. Blackpool Council, which has a 5% stake in the airport, has backed the plans.
