Blackpool airport expects record festive period

Blackpool International Airport is expecting a record festive period. It has more than 20,000 festive travellers booked onto 100 flights out of the county this week as people look to escape wintry weather over the next few days.
The figures represent a 100% increase on last year's passenger numbers over Christmas as a result of a big increase in destinations available from the Lancashire terminal. Thousands of people have already flooded onto flights at the start of this week and more people are expected to jet out before the weekend as they visit holiday homes in sunny Spain.
Blackpool airport business development director Gareth Kennedy said: 'The majority of people we have seen leaving so far have been heading to Malaga. People just wanted to escape the gloom of a North West winter and go somewhere they know they will see blue sky and sunshine.'
'It is clear from these figures that Blackpool International Airport is now a key regional airport with a big future and we have high hopes for the growth we have experienced this year to continue into 2006.'
'By the end of this year we will have had more than 400,000 passengers pass through our terminal doors and in the following year we anticipate that figure will be approaching, if not breaking, the one million barrier. It shows clearly that a growing number of air travellers prefer to use an airport that is easy to drive to and near to where they live, but which has none of the crowds and all the facilities of a big city terminal.'
