Carlisle Airport development will not hit Blackpool plans
25.12.08
Blackpool Airport bosses say their plans to increase passengers will not be affected by proposals to develop Carlisle Airport, the Gazette reports.
Carlisle City Council's planning committee has approved a £19m scheme that will see freight company Stobart move its headquarters to the airport site and bring the terminal back to a standard that will enable commercial passenger flights to re-launch. The development is expected to create and safeguard 1500 jobs and contribute more than £38m to Cumbria's economy each year.
However, a spokesman for Blackpool Airport said growth at Carlisle would not have an negative impact on the Squires Gate hub. She told the newspaper: ‘As we understand it, this is mainly a proposal for freight flights. It will not have an impact on our commercial side at all. Also, our catchment area is more the south Lakes rather than the northern part of Cumbria.’
